Inspired Youth is pleased to announce a new co-production driven by care experienced young people. The creative journey will culminate in a spoken word film and will be showcased alongside leading artists from around the world as part of York’s first ever Mediale, a brand new international digital arts festival.
The One Percent puts care experienced young people’s real experiences at the heart of the creative process, to inspire others by using arts, media and film to highlight key messages about the care journeys
Inspired Youth’s Director and award winning filmmaker Kev Curran and York based Hip Hop artist Kritikal Powers bring together a group of young people from the city, to create spoken word performances on film, bringing their personal experiences to life through the creation of a character representing a shared experience of the group.
The results of the project will be showcased for the first time during York Mediale, alongside a debate about what more can be done both nationally and locally to support young people more effectively during times of big life change.
The One Percent relates to a national statistic that around one percent of children are looked after by the care system – in York, this equates to around 200 children and young people in care, with another 50 with special guardianship or child arrangement orders. This one percent of children is then often compared unfavourably to the remaining 99%, with statistics showing lower academic achievement rates, and higher incidence of criminal convictions and drug use. Inspired Youth believes that these figures risk putting limitations on what young people leaving the care system believe they can achieve. The One Percent aims to use creative digital storytelling to highlight the real people behind the statistics.
