The One Percent project explores the care journey from care to independence through the eyes and perspective of care experienced young people on different parts of that journey. The project is a co production driven by young people in partnership with Inspired Youth, York Mediale and Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
Together the group have written and recorded a spoken word poem in masterclasses with Kritikal Powers, based on the journey of Sam, a young care leaver on the journey from care to independence. Now the team behind the poem have started visualising the characters journey through a film production with Inspired Youth that will bring the words to life.
Day 2 of filming welcomed Keeva to the project to perform scenes for the film. In Keeva’s scenes we introduce a positive foster carer character played by Shauna Concannon. Keeva is well known for her role in How To Fly and she was soon into her character role creating a good connection with Shauna in her scenes.
These scenes highlight the impact that a positive placement had on Sam after facing a rocky start in life. All the scenes in the film were devised collaboratively with the team and are inspired by the poem written by the young people.
The One Percent will be showcased as part of York Mediale on 2nd October 2018, check the festival website for updates on the launch.
